IMA doctors protest as a man attacks doctor in Latur over his mother's death due to COVID-19

On Wednesday, a doctor in Latur was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by the son of a COVID-19 patient, who died at an Alfa hospital. The police said that the doctor suffered a deep cut in his chest but was stable. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) then staged a protest along with local doctors as they shut their clinics after the attack. Police had registered a case and have arrested the 35 year old man on the charges of attack against Dr Dinesh Verma, who is attached to the hospital.

As per the police officials, a resident of Udgir was admitted to Alfa hospital on Tuesday afternoon for treatment of coronavirus infection. Local IMA doctors informed the family as she died on Wednesday morning.

Dr Avinash Bhondwe, IMA state president said that Dr Verma informed her son, and they took a lift to the ground floor together. The moment they stepped out of the lift, the patient’s son attacked him with a knife.

Superintendent of Police in Latur district, Dr Rajendra Mane said that the incident occurred as the relatives of the deceased person were very angry over her death. Dr Verma suffered a deep cut in his chest and was immediately rescued by the hospital’s security guards. He was then rushed to another hospital.

Dr Kalyan Barmade, a gynaecologist in Latur said that they have decided not to work to support Dr Verma.

Police officials said that the accused would be tested for coronavirus before any further investigation. Dr Vishvas Kulkarni, said that the doctors’ body had demanded 24-hour police protection and the IMA has demanded arrest and immediate action.
